2004 Mac Bible Software Survey Responses

Mac Users Speak Out About Bible Software.

by David Lang (Posted: 7/22/04)

This page contains the full text of all 189 survey responses
. I have removed the e-mail addresses and abbreviated the names in order to protect the privacy of those who filled out the survey. Occasionally, I have moved information from one field to another, or have "corrected" a few responses in order to aid in the collection of meaningful statistics. For example, one survey respondent selected "Bible Reader Free" as his primary Bible software, but it became clear from the rest of his survey response that he was really using the Palm program called "Bible Reader." I therefore changed his choice of primary Bible software to "Palm Software" and entered "Bible Reader" into the description field. Other than those kinds of changes, I have not altered the survey responses in any way.

For a summary of this year's survey results, see this article.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Web-based study is available at no cost with many of the features of other software. Accordance is supposed to be the most comprehensive, solution, but at a very high price and the user interface is not MacOS X-like, regardless of what the company says about it.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?

I am using mostly a web-based solution, which is the same for Windows and Mac.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Accordance people: bring in someone who can and will redesign your user interface, not merely apply aqua widget appearance to the same old terse-yet-cluttered UI.

Used OnLine Bible for a while in Classic. Too much of a pain to boot into.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I wouldn't be a good one to ask. Our major setback has always been finances & I can't justify a purchase when I can get someting that will work for free. That is why I encourage MacSword

Name: N. R.

Ministry Involvement:
     Lay minister/ministry volunteer

How do you use your Bible Software?
Sermon Preparation, Occasional verse/word look up

Which Bible program do you primarily use?
Online Bible (Mac)          Version: Not sure. 2 years old? (Sorry, I'm filling this in at the office.)

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS 9 or below

What do you like best about this software?
It's so easy to scroll by chapter or book by clicking on the scroll arrow or bar; or to jump within 2 chapters of the target by dragging the scroll box.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I haven't taken the time yet to learn whether it can look up all the occurrences of a Strong's reference number, and give me the amplified translation of the original. I expect it can, but instead of learning that, I still use an old program called WordSearch, where I just click on the word in the KJV.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
I haven't paid for the NIV in OLB, so I use my other program for that. Is The Message available? I haven't looked. At the moment I'm only using the free modules. When I get my next Mac I may treat myself to Accordance anyway.

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?
     Other          Version: 2

If you chose "Internet Bibles," "Palm Software," "PC Software," or "Other", please give the specific program or site(s) used:
     WordSearch

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS 9 or below

What do you like best about this software?
As mentioned above, I use WordSearch to find a word in the original language simply by clicking on a word in KJV. This opens a Strongs window with the number & amplified definition including alternative translations. The next time I choose Find verses, the default is to find all occurrences of that Strongs number.

Also, I like the basic way it works, adding verses to a Ref List, allowing multiple lists which can be combined etc.

Also, I paid for the NIV when I bought it. This is the version we have in church so I normally have to preach from it.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
There are quite a few indexing errors of the Strongs number from the KJV text. It is fast for searching, but strangely slow when scrolling through the full text.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
No hope as the company has stopped developing it for Mac.

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Accordance: the best for serious study. iLumina: multimedia experience. OLB: Free for OS9; fKey to insert verses in other apps. (I keep hearing how good that is; must figure out how to do it one day!)

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
David Lang always says so! i.e. that the programs are so far ahead of the Windows competition that it's worth buying a Mac if you study the Bible. Other users on Mac-Min generally concur.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Accordance. I'm still on OS9 and may as well wait until I get a new Mac. Also, the price put me off in the past as the programs I already had were sufficient for my needs, but I understand the price has come down in the last few years.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Umm.. dunno. Could you all do that fKey thing?

Which Bible program do you primarily use?
     iBible          Version: 2.6

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS X (Native)

What do you like best about this software?
     (1) It is a native OSX app. (2) It was cheap. At the time, I couldn't find very many freeware options out there, and the Accordance ordering process was too complex. Price and platform were the most important for me.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
More translations. I understand that they are having trouble licensing other more popular translations. (Kudos to Accordance for this!)

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
I don't know enough to make an informed comparison

Please Explain:
I used Quick Verse and PC Bible in my "other" life, and have not yet fully tested all the Mac software available.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Accordance team - Get your online ordering working. I live overseas, and while the new download process is nicer (for the actual program itself), having to call to place my order and give my credit card over the phone in such an unsecured manner is not going to happen. :-) Also, make the modules available via download. Making a disc image is so easy, and with broadband being so prevalent these days, downloads are preferred over CD's sent through the mail. I can't tell you how many times I have almost gone ahead and called to get the full version, but then...the CD's. I even communicated with the Oaksoft office and asked for downloadable modules, and was turned down. Oh well.

Downloads - easy ordering process - relatively inexpensive product ---> Those are my three biggest pieces of advice.

     They're all lightweights.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
     1. The Mac user interface is infinitely more friendly. 2. You don't have to constantly worry about viruses. 3. You are not supporting Bill Gates and his contributions to world-wide abortion agencies.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Be more responsive to users. The main response I have gotten when I talk to Bible software people is, in general, one of being defensive. Their response, "We've got this software that we think is tremendous. You should buy it because we think it's so great. The reason we don't have the features that you want is because they are trivial."

Higher resolution 3D map that can be rotated by grab and drag, not by using those three joystick controls.

More third-party modules containing teaching/doctrinal/theological/discipleship material (as opposed to plain reference material).

     Online Bible (Mac)          Version: 3

MacSword. Text-heavy, has lots of old public domain modules.

iLumina. Is fun to browse, has multimedia, useful for family learning but not good for research. The encyclopaedia seemed a bit weak to me.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
For the general non-scholarly user, Accordance, until Online Bible becomes OS X native. For the scholar, Accordance.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
I don't know enough to make an informed comparison

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
     Free cash!

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Most Bible software is stand-alone reference tools, such as Bible search and dictionaries/encyclopaedias. There is nothing that actually teaches you anything - perhaps this would be better served in a document or program that you would use alongside Bible search software. For example a study guide on basic doctrines that gave you clickable references to look up as you study the bible/doctrine/history involved.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I still think the program could be friendlier to those of us that mainly want to use it for comparing multiple versions; I find it very "search" oriented. I would like to see a preference to open a text window instead of a search window.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?

My main interest right now is in adding to the modules I have for Accordance. Lack of funds is the limiting factor.

What do you like best about this software?
Amplify feature; variety of reference works; look and feel of new version

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
Still waiting for a "random" (providence?) button that will allow one to click and have the software randomly open a Bible passage; I would like to see a global search feature (i.e., be able to search all my Accordance books for key word and have a master hit list appear--maybe this feature already exists in the software, but I have not found it.)

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
Still looking for more material on cults and new religious movements. Maybe (underline)Kingdom of the Cults(underline); (underline)The Challenge of the Cults and New Religions(underline); (underline)Dictionary of Contemporary Religion in the Western World(underline); also more of IVPs pocket dictionaries, such as the one on ethics and the one on new religious movements; Also more apologetics material, such as Baker's Dictionary of Apologetics(underline) by Geisler and the new Apologetics Study Bible available from Broadman and Holman in late 2005; (underline)Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview(underline) by Moreland and Craig (IVP); More philosophical works linked to Bible texts (Augustine's Confessions, City of God; Pascal's Pensees; Aquinas Summa Theologica, etc.

Libronix Digital Library System (Logos)--it's a cluttered mess, but it does have a global search feature. Forced to use it sometimes at work (Windows 2000). Zondervan NIV Bible Library (1997)--fast and easy, but no longer supported (Windows 2000 and under Virtual PC). Online: Bible Gateway (www.biblegateway.com)--easy for a quick look up if I'm online already. It has multiple versions available and it's free to use.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I've only used Accordance on Mac, so have no point of reference for other options.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
There seem to be more reference works available for Windows, but by different vendors. Mac seems more limited in what is available for the scholar.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Probably a lot of Accordance modules. Holding me back? Money. Also, would like to take more advantage of the modules I already have before getting more.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Offer a simple, elegant, but powerful interface--that's what Mac's are all about.

     Accordance Bible Software          Version: 6.1.2

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS X (Native)

What do you like best about this software?
New OSX UI is great improvement -enough to make me buy Accordance. Also the features are so comprehensive.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
The Zondervan Mac NIV package is seriously behind the Zond. PC Packages. I would love to have this updated a.s.a.p. Also I would like to have new modules like the satellite photos on NET bible. Another improvement would be a simpler way to generate personal modules. (e.g. I would like to create a searchable Irish (Gaelic) Bible Accordance module.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
Yes - I use David Guziks commentary which are superb. These would be a great modern resource. I notice Calvary Chapel have many free bible resources & commentators -could we make some of these available. See above suggestions ie. Gaelic Text and Satellite photos. Also maybe a free non tagged Septuagint would be very good. More free/cheaper modules.

The downloadable Net Bible- Great notes - great satellite photos.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Accordance is certainly king of Mac bible software with MacSword and Internet bibles as good free companions.

     None

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I would advise him to purchase the Accordance. I have seen and tried a lot of others and in my Humble opinion (not that I have ever had a humble opinion) it is the best.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
     No

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
I don't know if you have done this, but a Consumers Report type of comparison would be very useful to people who are looking for software. People change all the time for some reason or another: i.e. going to Mac OS X, unhappy with the software they have, need additional software, etc. There is a huge market for Spanish Bible Software. Unfortunately the market is in Latin America and I don't have much information available about what is going on there. Maybe a TidBits like newsletter, not every week, but when there are upgrades, new programs that were once Windows exclusive, etc. I would be interested in that. But I think that what interests me the most is the foreign language Bible software. I do think there is enough of a market to warrant efforts in development in at least Spanish and probably Portuguese, with the size of the church in Brazil. Maybe other languages, as well.

You are doing a very good job. I am glad you are helping us out in this area. Bible software makes all the other work created by new technology (read email) worth it.

What do you like best about this software?
Price. Ease of use (could be easier). Good searching tools. Incredible amount of versions and reference modules available.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
OSX version with very strict compliance with Aqua standards and custom menu control. Fast start--as fast as possible.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Online Bible - Not available in OSX - bad! Interface is still stuck in OS6 mode iBible - Bugs you for payment MacSword - Has the right motivation, free. Would like to see it make money on modules. Modules are very difficult to install on OSX.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Windows Bible Software is better than that available for Mac

Please Explain:
There is more to choose from. I do like the "ministry" attitude of the folks from Online Bible as well as MacSword.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Online Bible is my first choice. I have purchased the Deluxe CD, but still waiting on even a BETA version for OSX. They have been very slow in providing it. VERY slow.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Stick with what makes Aqua such a great interface. Control over menu items, nice look, fast starting. Standardize the module data to work across applications if possible. Ask for help in the design of menu icons, offer free end product if art is chosen. Have two versions availabe, regular and lite. The lite version is free, but limited in searching and other tools. If I were to design my ultimate bible program, it would have the ability to select Bible text, give it a choice of colors (that correspond with custom labels) and link it to notes and media. So as I read my Bible and see, say, a green text, I know that there is link there. I click it and up comes a note I wrote regarding the original text or a thought or a photo of the location the scripture relates to. C'mon guys, lets have a little vision here! ;-)

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
The developers of the Online Bible, especially Ken Hamel, considers his work a ministry, and has kept the selling price low enough for almost anyone to afford, and gives a very deep discount, bringiing the price down close to cost of production, to missionary personnel. That is an unbeatable attitude and approach. It doesn't make much money, but it makes an excellent tool available to more people.

In which platform do you use this software?
     On a handheld/PDA

What do you like best about this software?
ALWAYS with me; good choice of translations

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I would like to be able to have all my my preferred translations (NIV/NASB/NKJV/FRENCH/SPANISH) available in one program, rather than having to maintain two programs.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.
From time to time I fire up OLB on the Mac, but more and more I'm able to do what I want on other programs, and avoid using Classic. A shame though, as it is my only NIV source on the Mac (I paid for that a long time ago and am unwilling to pay another fee for a translation I've already licensed).

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
If he or she is a serious student, and has the budget, I would probably recommend that he look into Accordance. Otherwise, I would say start out with MacSword and see if it suits your needs.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Accordance: To say "price" is a given, but not very helpful. Specifically, their pricing seems a bit confusing to me on the web site. I would like some kind of "a la carte" pricing, or a page where I could choose which modules I wanted. The web application would apply discounting so that I ended up getting a good package deal, but with a package that I designed myself.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
I don't mind proprietary formats and modules, but please include support for open formats, too, even at the cost of "reduced functionality" in the module.

A transfer service would probably be a good project for someone, moving translations from one program's format to another.

Which Bible program do you primarily use?
     Online Bible (Mac)          Version: 3.5.1

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS 9 or below

What do you like best about this software?
ease of use, F-Key feature for inserting text in any document (only works in OS 9) and the price (special discounts are given to missionaries).

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I am waiting to see what the OS X version is like. I understand the F-key feature has not been incorporated in the new version which will be sorely missed.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
The Bible Knowledge Commentary and other newer commentaries that have some "meat" in them. I understand the Online Bible remains relatively inexpensive because it only has the older classic works that do not have copyrights.

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?
     AGES Library          Version: 8

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS 9 or below

What do you like best about this software?
I use the AGES library in OS 9 because I like Acrobat Reader 4 for ease of use and research because of the query feature. The Acrobat Reader 6 (OS X) is more complex than I like plus it doesn't support the search feature found on version 4.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
The biggest improvement will have to come from Adobe when they incorporate the search feature in an update for OS X.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
Little by little AGES keeps adding to their list of resources. Besides the basic Library, I have 8 other CDs (Pulpit Commentary, Biblical Illustrator, McClintock & Strong Encyclopedia, etc.). plus one CD in Spanish produced by Mundo Hispano (Southern Baptists). Again it would be a big help if they could make available more current commentaries, like John MacArthur, Spiro Zodiates, etc.

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.
Fundamental Baptist Library produced by David Cloud; it works through your web browser.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Because I have only used Online Bible, I really couldn't do an honest comparison with other versions. I just know that I have been extremely pleased with the OLB. Maybe the makers of Bible software should have demos available so that we Mac users can at least try them out before purchasing something with wihich we don't use later because we are not comfortable with it.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
I don't know enough to make an informed comparison

Please Explain:
I have never spent any meaningful time around my PC friends when they were using their Bible software.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
If I were really convinced that there is a better product available, I would be more willing to spend a reasonable amount of money to purchase it.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be?
Keep the program simple to use and the price reasonable.
